1. This is generally expressed by the statement that the idea of God is “innate.” But the expression seems to be unfortunate. (1.) There are no innate truths in the ordinary acceptation of the word innate. The mind possesses no ideas independent of all suggestion, or inward contemplation. No truth becomes truth to the mind, until it is perceived to be truth. (2.) If the idea of God were innate in the mind, as this word is commonly understood, that idea would be as perfect in one man as in another.
